You’ll love your Jersey Giant Chickens! These large, beautiful birds may grow to 10-13 lbs. but expect to be patient with their growth. These birds mature at a slower rate than other breeds.
This breed has a solid history. In the 1800’s this breed was popular as capons and broilers. They were first create by crossing three large, dark Asiatic breeds: Black Javas, Black Langshans, and Dark Brajmas. However, it was ultimately discovered that Giant Jersey Chickens mature at a slower rate than other breeds. As a result, they dwindled in popularity for commercial broiling. Back then, these birds were even bigger!
That said, these birds will grow!
Black Jersey Giants grow a pound larger than White Jersey Giants.
As they’re developing it’s amazing to watch the feathers grow. Don’t be surprised if you encounter some white feathers in the first and second stage feathering. Baby chicks are mostly black. However you may see white patches on the belly, face and wing tips. Typically by the sixth month your birds will have solid black feathers. The black plumage on your birds often has a beautiful green sheen and because it’s right next to the straight red comb, it really becomes a showstopper.
They lay large brown eggs and they’ll average between 180-260 eggs annually. They also produce in winter as they’re hardy.
You’ll love that these birds have a docile temperament and even the cocks rarely show aggression.
